About Form+Folk
We are an award-winning RIBA Chartered Practice, founded in 2019, and our core purpose is to practice architecture for the benefit of people, communities and the planet.
Process
Our process aligns with all eight stages of the RIBA Plan of Work. However, in almost all cases, this can be simplified into three basic steps:
Design and planning
RIBA Stages 0-3
Detailed design
RIBA Stage 4
Construction
RIBA Stages 5-7
Each step represents reaching a significant milestone in the project, with each one building on the outputs of the last. This is also how we structure our fees — again, it keeps things simple.
Sustainability
Sustainability underpins everything we do, and we always try to consider it in the broadest possible terms. It’s not a ‘look’, and it’s not an energy standard. It’s much bigger than that. It’s about thinking strategically, critically, and ethically about the needs of the project, the planet and future generations, and then finding solutions that reconcile those ideas. Here are some of the strategies we use:
Exploring ‘no-build’ solutions and embracing sufficiency
Developing retrofit strategies for existing buildings
Designing for re-use and flexibility
Specifying bio-based materials
Keeping designs simple, robust, and well put together
Energy modelling and lifetime carbon assessment
Making projects net-zero ready
Collaboration
Buildings and places should be shaped by the people and communities that will use and benefit from them. No matter the project, we enjoy working closely with all stakeholders to create real social, economic, and environmental value for the widest range of people. As a RIBA Chartered Practice and a signatory to Architects Declare, we also believe that openly sharing what we learn with our peers can drive positive change in our profession and industry.
